Lectures and Seminars in the course

Lecture 1, 9 september 2004, By Dr. Ir. Fons J. Verbeek

The first lecture in this course introduces the key entities found in Life Sciences information systems. It focusses on the most important information resources in moluecular genetics en biology. The information systems that will be reviewed in this course are breifly mentioned so as to get the flavour of the topics that will be discussed.

In support of some basic knowledge on (molecular) biology a primer in molecular genetics is made available.

Lecture 2, 16 september 2004, By Dr.Nies Huijsmans

In this lecture two basic units of information are introduced, i.e. molecules and images. Once the components of a molecule are established, it can be visualised by molecular graphics. It is explained how this relates to information found in molecular databases and how visualisation of molecular information from molecules is realised. Next, the topic of retrieving information from images is discussed. Features relevant to search are discussed with structure of image databases.

Lecture 3, 23 september 2004, By Dr. Erwin Bakker

In this lecture the acquisition of genetic information for comparative genomic hybridization is explained as it is present in the framework of the DIAL project. LIACS is a participant of within this DIAL project. Genomic data are obtained by microarrays and the storage and retrieval of such data is discussed.
