{"id":1088,"date":"2020-05-04T08:56:21","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T08:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liacs.leidenuniv.nl\/~verbernes\/wordpress\/?page_id=1088"},"modified":"2021-12-06T19:52:38","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T19:52:38","slug":"news-updates-archive","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/liacs.leidenuniv.nl\/~verbernes\/wordpress\/welcome\/news-updates-archive\/","title":{"rendered":"News\/updates archive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>December 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We concluded the year in my research group on December 18 with a roundtable in which everyone shared a photo, something positive and something negative about 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1340968509174665216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tweets<\/a>.<br><\/li><li>On December 15, I was interviewed about false news, social media analytics, and the role of AI during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universiteitleiden.nl\/en\/sails\/research\/webinar-dec-2020-art-society-and-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAILS event &#8220;The Future of AI is Human&#8221;.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sails_Leiden\/status\/1335871440785117185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tweet<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/liacs.leidenuniv.nl\/~verbernes\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/EoucOjEUUAQaPG8.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>I attended COLING 2020 (online) from 8 to 11 December. Together with Yuting Hu, I <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1336333763681239047\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">presented our paper<\/a> on Named Entity Recognition for Chinese biomedical patents.<\/li><li>On December 7, I gave an invited lecture in the Glasgow Information Retrieval seminar series on Explainable IR. <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1mc-kpcTqyztQMnJtIpan-qPc40CgQzpi\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Video<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ir_glasgow\/status\/1335965077082615808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tweet<\/a>.<\/li><li>The last lecture of the Text Mining course was on December 2nd The online course was a much better experience than I had expected, thanks to the active participation of the students and my great TAs. We had ~90 participants of whom ~60 came to the online lectures.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>November 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reviewing season! I am reviewer for CHIIR, senior programma committe member for TheWebConf and ECIR, and Area chair for EACL.<\/li><li>Only a few lectures left in the Text Mining course. In lecture 11 and 13, we have <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1328609977687281665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">presentations of scientific papers<\/a>. In groups of 4, the students choose a paper from the list, read and discuss it, make sure they understand it, and present it in 15 minutes in break-out sessions. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>October 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Myrthe Reuver, PhD student at the VU Amsterdam on the project &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/ccs.amsterdam\/projects\/rethinking-news-algorithms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rethinking news algorithms<\/a>: nudging users towards diverse news exposure&#8221; has started her project and we <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMLeiden\/status\/1322143002844897280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">welcomed<\/a> her as guest member of TMR.<a href=\"http:\/\/liacs.leidenuniv.nl\/~verbernes\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ElUjd7FW0AIhVCB.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li><li>The MISDOOM symposium on Misinformation in Open Online Media, held online on October 26-27, was a great success! (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MISDOOM2020?src=hashtag_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweets<\/a> about the event)<\/li><li>I participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maisonworkshop.org\/program_1\/panels#h.tqxfu4e2zs0j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discussion panel on Misinformation and Covid-19<\/a> during the MAISoN workshop on October 19.<\/li><li>Master student Mohamed Barbouch presented his <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007%2F978-3-030-60975-7_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a> &#8220;Combining Language Models and Network Features for Relevance-based Tweet Classification&#8221; at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SocInfo20?src=hashtag_click\">#SocInfo20<\/a><\/li><li>We have a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1313433561991704576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PhD position open<\/a> at the UvA on &#8220;Automated Social network and news media analysis to promote cancer screening&#8221; (a ZonMW project coordinated by Gert-Jan de Bruijn)<br><\/li><li>Only a few weeks left until <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MISDOOM2020?src=hashtag_click\">#MISDOOM2020<\/a>, the 2nd Multidisciplinary International Symposium on Disinformation in Open Online Media. We have compiled a very interesting online programme with 70 regular presentations and 3 invited talks <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/01bMsFNY7e?amp=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/2020.misdoom.org\/program\/<\/a><\/li><li>My PhD student Anne Dirkson explained her work on text mining from patient discussion forums in the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oKKGyAHCzLc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3 October University<\/a>&#8216;, and she did really great!<\/li><li>We have been awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alex_brandsen\/status\/1311653686230347777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grant<\/a> in the Archeologie Telt programme of NWO-SSH on on multi-lingual text mining and retrieval for archaeology! This means that I will keep working with Alex Brandsen for the next years.<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>September 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The paper &#8220;Named Entity Recognition for Chinese biomedical patents&#8221;, work by my master student Yuting Hu&#8221;, was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1311279676896301057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accepted<\/a> for COLING 2020! <\/li><li>My former master students Ioannis Chios and Anneloes Louwe received their diploma during an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1309477337143140352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online graduation ceremony<\/a>.<\/li><li>The research meetings of my research group TMR are still held online. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMLeiden\/status\/1309435827123097600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">We welcome some new group members<\/a>!<\/li><li>My PhD student Alex Brandsen was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universiteitleiden.nl\/en\/artificial-intelligence\/our-experts\/alex-brandsen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interviewed<\/a> about his work on Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval methods for Archaeological texts<\/li><li>After six months of working from home, I was able to go to the Snellius building for one day per week in September. It was great to see colleagues again. Unfortunately, by the end of September, the Covid restrictions became more strict again and I went back to working from home for the whole semester.<\/li><li>We kicked off the online master course <a href=\"http:\/\/tmr.liacs.nl\/TM.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Text Mining<\/a> with around 100 students and &#8211; luckily &#8211; 4 excellent teaching assistants!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>August 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>After 3.5 years on the tenure track, I have been awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor (&#8216;universitair hoofddocent&#8217;)!<\/li><li>I took some very essential vacation \ud83d\ude42<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>July 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I presented the paper &#8220;Helping results assessment by adding explainable elements to the deep relevance matching model&#8221; (work by master student Ioannis Chios) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ears2020.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EARS workshop<\/a> at SIGIR.<\/li><li>I chaired the <a href=\"http:\/\/sigir.org\/women-in-ir\/sigir2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women-in-IR<\/a> sessions during SIGIR 2020. We had two <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1288144543355932673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amazing panels<\/a> with participants from all over the world.<\/li><li>On July 15, I gave an online training for the Computational Linguistics course in the EU Erasmus+ project &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsai-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Curriculum Development in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence<\/a>&#8220;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1259829373265424384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Five bachelor students<\/a> completed their thesis under my supervision in June and July. I taught a bachelor course (elective) on Data Science with about 30 students. Half-way we had to switch to online teaching and we <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suzan\/status\/1283405865421283329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survived<\/a>.<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ears2020.github.io\/accept_papers\/2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a> &#8220;Helping results assessment by adding explainable elements to the deep relevance matching model&#8221; with master student Ioannis Chios was accepted for the workshop on ExplainAble Recommendation and Search (EARS2020) at SIGIR<br><\/li><li>Historical linguist  Lauren Fonteyn has been awarded a Digital Infrastructure grant for the project MacBERTh, in which she will develop a BERT model for historical English.<br><\/li><li>Collega Antal van den Bosch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nporadio1.nl\/de-taalstaat\/onderwerpen\/59794-2020-06-06-antal-van-den-bosch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vertelde bij De Taalstaat op Radio 1<\/a> over ons project waarin we welbevinden tijdens de coronacrisis meten via sociale-media-analyse.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>May 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrec-conf.org\/proceedings\/lrec2020\/pdf\/2020.lrec-1.562.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper (Alex Brandsen et al.)<\/a> on creating a NER training dataset in the archaeology domain has been published in the LREC2020 proceeding. <\/li><li>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclweb.org\/anthology\/2020.parlaclarin-1.8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper (Hugo de Vos and Suzan Verberne)<\/a> on Challenges of Applying Automatic Speech Recognition for Transcribing EU Parliament Committee Meetings has been published in the Proceedings of the Second ParlaCLARIN Workshop.<\/li><li>We have published a first draft of a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) <a href=\"https:\/\/surfdrive.surf.nl\/files\/index.php\/s\/YlzeG4mQRFWRebD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">checklist<\/a> for  ACM-SIGIR events, as a reference for the community<br><\/li><li>We have a PhD position open for the project &#8216;Rethinking news algorithms: nudging users towards diverse news exposure&#8217;. The position is at the VU Amsterdam and the first supervisor is Antske Fokkens. I am the second supervisor.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>April 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I am involved in a project on Social Media Monitoring of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivm.nl\/coronavirus-covid-19\/onderzoek\/gedrag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RIVM<\/a> (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment), focussing on the extraction of behavioral aspects related to COVID-19 from open social media. I supervise one of my PhD students (Anne Dirkson) and two master students (Mohamed Barbouch and Rayan Suryadikara) in this project.<\/li><li>On April 22, we had the annual meeting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/social-media-analytics.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H2020 <\/a> RISE project &#8216;Social Media Analytics&#8217;, as a virtual online event. I chaired the session about prototypes, addressing the 2020 deliverables for the analysis of social media content.<br><\/li><li>All <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMLeiden\/status\/1253630212950183936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">group meetings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMLeiden\/status\/1255037510750789633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thesis presentations<\/a> have moved online as well.<\/li><li>Two of my PhD students, Gineke Wiggers and Juan Pablo Bascur, presented their work in the 10th International Workshop on Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval (<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/bir-ws\/bir-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BIR 2020<\/a>) on April 14. I recorded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eM1Kwevrdkc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a> on invitation by the organizers to congratulate them with the 10th edition of the workshop.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ecir2020\/status\/1251197365949796353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>On April 14, I chaired the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecir2020.org\/doctoral-consortium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doctoral consortium at ECIR<\/a> together with Stefan Rueger. It was a successful online event with two inspiring keynotes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>March 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mare published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mareonline.nl\/en\/science\/from-covid19-to-toiletpaper-can-social-media-help-in-times-of-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with me<\/a> about the H2020  RISE project &#8216;Social Media Analytics&#8217;, in which COVID-19 is a relevant current case study.<br><\/li><li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universiteitleiden.nl\/en\/news\/2020\/03\/online-teaching-series-suzan-verberne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a> about my experience with working and teaching from home at the university&#8217;s home page.<\/li><li>All education has been moved online. I am one of the local organizers and in charge of <a href=\"https:\/\/bnaic.liacs.leidenuniv.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the website<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>January 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>My group has 7 presentations at <a href=\"https:\/\/clin30.sites.uu.nl\/programme\/detailed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLIN30<\/a>, 2 talks and 5 posters. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMLeiden\/status\/1222783600598376448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li><li>I am happy to be part of a new interdisciplinary NWO project with Ioulia Ossokina (TU\/e), Theo Arentze (TU\/e), and Vladimir Karamychev (EUR): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tue.nl\/en\/news\/news-overview\/28-01-2020-helping-low-income-families-with-energy-transition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BEL (Behaviour, Energy transition, Low income)<\/a>: &#8220;Tenants\u2019 behavioural responses to residential energy transition: are intended energy savings feasible?&#8221;<\/li><li>On March 6, 2020 we are organizing the symposium &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/360datascience.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">360 Degrees of Data Science<\/a>&#8216;, giving the floor to Data Science in new and exciting domains.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>December 2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I am proud that I am one of the nominees for the faculty of science&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universiteitleiden.nl\/science-talents-and-discoveries\/teacher-of-the-year-award\/nominee-liacs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teacher of the Year award<\/a>!<\/li><li>I am currently recruiting two international PhD students in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dossier-project.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H2020 project DoSSIER<\/a>, on Domain-specific Information Extraction and Retrieval. <a href=\"http:\/\/ifs.tuwien.ac.at\/dossier\/phd_positions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Application web page.<\/a><\/li><li>I am a member of the newly established Ethics Review Committee of the Science Faculty<\/li><li>I am general co-chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/2020.misdoom.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MISDOOM 2020<\/a>: the 2nd Multidisciplinary International Symposium on Disinformation in Open Online Media, to be held on April 20-22, 2020 in Leiden<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>November 2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/liacs.leidenuniv.nl\/~verbernes\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ULMFiT_poster.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/liacs.leidenuniv.nl\/~verbernes\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/BERT-NL-poster.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>I presented two posters at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir2019.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dutch-Belgium Information Retrieval workshop<\/a>: one together with Benjamin van der Burgh about experiments on Dutch data proving the benefits of ULMFiT for classification with small datasets, and one with Alex Brandsen on the release of the Dutch BERT model, BERT-NL.<\/li><li>My group (in particular Alex Brandsen and Benjamin van der Burgh) has published a number of Dutch-language data sets, together with pre-trained BERT and ULMFiT language models on <a href=\"http:\/\/textdata.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">textdata.nl<\/a>.<\/li><li>NWO published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwo.nl\/en\/news-and-events\/news\/2019\/11\/first-national-research-agenda-for-artificial-intelligence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First national research agenda for Artificial Intelligence<\/a> (AIREA-NL), for which I was a member of the expert committee<\/li><li>On November 5, I gave an invited lecture in the Lorentz workshop &#8220;the future on academic lexicography&#8221; on Text Mining for Lexicography. There was a large, interested and engaging crowd. This means that Xue Wang will continue her PhD project in LIACS under supervision of Fons Verbeek and me.<\/li><li>Our paper &#8220;Lexical Normalization of User-Generated Medical Forum Data&#8221; (Anne Dirkson, Suzan Verberne, and Wessel Kraaij) was accepted for the workshop on <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlanguageprocessing.org\/smm4h\/?sf103511273=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Media Mining for Health Applications<\/a> at ACL 2019. In addition, Anne successfully participated in all shared tasks at the SMM4H workshop, resulting in the paper &#8220;Transfer learning for health-related Twitter data&#8221;.<\/li><li>Together with a number of LIACS colleagues, I am part of the project Curriculum Development in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence \/ DS&amp;AI, funded by Erasmus+<\/li><li>The spring semester is almost finished! I taught my last lecture in the Data Science bachelor course. The final course schedule can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/tmr.liacs.nl\/DS.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li><li>I organize an open meeting in Utrecht on clinical NLP on June 12, with 8 presentations (academic and non-academic) and discussion on the challenges of using text data in health records for knowledge extraction and predictive models. <a href=\"http:\/\/tmr.liacs.nl\/clinicalNLP.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Program and registration<\/a>.<\/li><li>I am one of the course coordinators of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siks.nl\/IR-2019.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the SIKS course &#8216;Advances in Information Retrieval&#8217;<\/a>, together with Arjen de Vries and Djoerd Hiemstra.
